vajacial: a facial for your... vagina?
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of waxing. I have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and one of the many side effects that can come with PCOS is heightened bodily hair growth. In other words, I can become quite hairy 😂. First things first - hair removal is definitely a cosmetic preference! But it’s admittedly part of my personal self-care routine and one of the services that always have me feeling great! And while razors work just fine, I just don’t have the time or patience for it. (I actually have a wax kit, and wax smaller areas of my body myself, but it also takes forever!)
I first learned about vajacials last year, and I’ve been wanting to get one ever since out of sheer curiosity. So I did!! Last week, I booked an appointment with my favorite wax esthetician, Chanelle from Eutopia Nail and Skin Bar in Riverdale Park, MD. Check out my need-to-knows about my experience below!
what is a vajacial?
A vajacial is basically a facial for your vagina! Well… not really the vagina, but the vulva. The vulva is the outer or external part of the female genitalia. The treatment doesn’t involve the inner part or the vagina at all.
so.. what actually happens?
A vajacial comes with everything you’d expect a facial to come with - steam cleansing of the area, exfoliant, extractions of ingrown hairs and blackheads, a soothing mask, and then a skin brightening serum or spot treatment to close out the service.
During the vajacial, you’re laid flat on the spa bed with your legs rested straight, unlike the butterfly position that you’re typically in during a bikini or Brazilian wax. The whole thing lasts anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes long, and is quite relaxing (aside from the extraction process, as you can imagine).
what are the benefits of getting a vajacial?
The benefits of the vajacial are mostly cosmetic. It’s advertised to help maintain clear, healthy, smooth, and hydrated skin in the vagina area. And specifically, it treats ingrown hairs and acne in the bikini area, removes dead skin, and helps with hyperpigmentation, which is really common among women of color.
is a vajacial worth it?
I was pleasantly surprised by how great the experience was and how soft my lady parts were after the service! However, vajacials are just really expensive ways to treat ingrowns, blackheads, or general acne in the vagina area. If you’re acne or ingrown-prone, I think the extraction process would be most beneficial to you, however, treating them at home by adding exfoliant and ingrown wipes to your regimen will give you the same results. I personally recommend European Wax Center’s Reveal Me™ Body Exfoliating Gel and Smooth Me™ Ingrown Hair Wipes. You can usually only get those products in-store, but they recently opened up a temporary pop-up shop (due to COVID) where you can purchase a bundle of the two products online.
Also, many inexperienced estheticians are now offering the service, and when left in poorly-trained hands, the experience could result in infection and unnecessary pain. So if you do go, make you go to licensed professional with experience with administering the service.
would you get a vajacial again?
Probably, but it’ll be more of a “treat yourself” kind of service, as opposed to something I’d do regularly for maintenance. Remember, the vagina pretty much cleans itself, so this would literally just be like an added spa bonus. Regular waxes and self-care down there will do the same thing!
For the entire month of July, I’ll be posting a blog post every Monday through Friday as part of Mattie James’ consistency challenge. I’ll be covering everything from love and relationships to motherhood, cooking, and home decor. #mjconsistencychallenge #mjconsistencypays
