Fighting Imposter Syndrome and Finding My Place

Fighting Imposter Syndrome and Finding My Place

Jumping into the sea of social media and laying my life out for the entire world wasn’t something I took lightly when my husband, Kier, and I decided to join YouTube as creators in 2017. I feel like I’ve always carried myself with confidence, and I’ve always been known to step through life’s ups and downs with grace. But, honestly, sharing my life online introduced me to a side of myself I didn’t know existed. Suddenly, out of nowhere, I’m navigating through a fog of doubt, questioning not just the path I’ve chosen, but also my place on it.

So, here’s some background on how it all started. My journey to content creation was sparked by the numerous times I turned to blogs and YouTube during my own life’s pivotal and overwhelming moments. Whether it was searching for DITL as a law student videos or religiously watching content from new and pregnant moms on YouTube, those online voices became my go-to guides. They were like beacons of hope, showing me that I wasn’t alone and that there was a community online just for me. So, when the time came, and I felt I had my own stories and insights to share—especially with "The Sit Down Talk"—it felt natural. I thought, “Sis, you got this.”

While opening up to the world and expecting to be that beacon for someone else, I found myself grappling with imposter syndrome for the first time in my life. It wasn’t about vanity or seeking approval. It was deeper than that. It was this lingering question of whether I deserve to be here, sharing my life and my decisions, especially when the echoes of past criticism and self-doubt start to whisper.

But through this journey, I’ve stumbled upon some truths:

  • Authenticity is key. My story and my voice are mine to share. It’s the authentic, raw moments that connect us, not the polished, picture-perfect snapshots.

  • Community is the foundation. Despite the doubts, the community we’ve built together here—your support and your stories—reminds me why I started. We’re in this together.

  • Vulnerability is the great connector. Sharing my doubts and my fears has opened up an ongoing conversation and community that’s growing and flourishing. It turns out that vulnerability might just be our strongest link.

If you’re feeling caught in the same whirlwind, here’s what I’ve learned about standing firm:

  • Remember your “why.” On those days when the doubt is loud, remind yourself why you started. That reason is your anchor.

  • Cherish your tribe. The connections, the shared stories, that’s the gold. Nurture those relationships; they’re what make this journey worthwhile.

  • Embrace your unique light. Your perspective and your voice matters. Don’t let the noise dim your shine.

  • Share the journey. Opening up about the struggle is not just therapeutic—it’s a bridge to understanding. We all have our battles.

This road to social media influencing has been one of the most enlightening, challenging, and honestly surprising adventures of my life. It’s taught me that even in moments of doubt, there’s strength in sharing, in being real, and in really connecting on a human level. If you’re in the same boat, I encourage you to keep reaching out, keep engaging, and most importantly, keep being you. In the vastness of the internet, it’s our individual stories and truths that carve out spaces of belonging and understanding.

Let’s get deeper with a thought prompt…

Have you ever felt like you’re on the outside looking in, even in your own life? How do you center yourself and find your voice again? I’d love to hear your stories, your strategies, your heart.
